2 out of 5 stars Good while it lasted   July 9, 2008
This recorder does a pretty good job. When it actual records, that is. It eats batteries like there's no tomorrow because it never actually turns itself off from what I can tell. You can put it on hold, but it's never really off until you take the batteries out. So if you want to buy this, be sure to carry extra AAA batteries with you just incase. Although you should probably warned further that I had this recorder for a few months and one day it just all the sudden stoped working. Stone cold died on me. I put fresh batteries in, was about to use it and it just would not turn on. It's dead to this day, will not work, will not turn on, not even able to function when I plug it into the computer to get the audio I had recorded off of it.

Basically, this is, in my opinion, not worth the price. You're much better off finding an Olympus digital recorder and spend the extra money on something that's more reliable and records at a better quality.

2 out of 5 stars No 'Off" switch   June 29, 2008
I use this recorder for class lectures and while the microphone adequately picks up the professor, I dislike the unit as Sony failed to provide an 'Off' switch. So if you buy this unit, be prepared to either 1) spend money on batteries, or 2) manually take them out and put them back in, resetting the time, date and settings. Batteries last roughly 2 weeks (this is based on recording about 5 1/2 hours a week; the rest drains away in my backpack...)

1 out of 5 stars Horrible, not what you expect from Sony   March 18, 2008
I don't know if the copy I purchased was bad, but the sound quality was just terrible. There was a hiss sound present during all recordings that really starts to drive you nuts when you want to listen to a recording. I was driven to purchase this recorder due to the Sony name and I became tired of using my MP3 player with a built in recorder as my conference recorder. Long story short, I'm going back to the MP3 player as my recorder. The initial purchase price was lower and the sound quality of the recordings is stellar in comparison.

4 out of 5 stars Retro Style Without an On/Off Button   March 12, 2008

The styling of this product makes me laugh. In appearance, it's a throw-back to the 1970's transistor radio. Functionality is quite fine, although as a few others have noted, it is slightly non-intuitive. The one thing I don't like is that it does not have an on/off button. You can however, place it in 'hold' mode which turns off the display.
