4 out of 5 stars Merely Demos, but Great Performances   December 20, 2001

For Duffy Power, these recordings are probably a sore spot. He was lured into a studio to lay down a collection of his latest pennings ostensibly as demos with the promise of a proper studio album with full arrangements. Instead, the record label popped out the demos and reneged on the proper album.

What this means is that most of the tunes feature Duffy accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica, with occasional piano assistance. It's very stark material. However, Duffy Power's fine voice smokes as memorably as ever and the material includes a great new original "Lily" as well as reprises of numbers which had hardly been issued anyway, such as "Mary Open the Door" and "Little Boy Blue." His cover of "Little Man, You've Had a Busy Day" again showcases his quality as a jazz vocalist. And he reveals Lennon/MacCartney's "Fixing a Hole" to be a real song.

Duffy Power never had a hit. He never made the big time. But all of the serious jazz and blues musicians in the U.K. knew him and many backed him at various times in his career. This string of naked performances will demonstrate why. However, if you are looking for a starting place for the discovery of Duffy Power, I recommend "Just Stay Blue" which spans a number of years and includes finished ensemble performances. This set is for those who have already discovered the man.
