awesome head unit March 2, 2008 I love the Avic-z1. Its easy to use, have a ton of features, works great, no glitches, accurate, great accessories. I've had it for about 2 years and not had any issues. Pioneer has made a great product. It has a hard drive to store music, dvd playback, navi, xm, sirius, ipod, xm traffic, audio inputs, bluetooth...the list goes on and on. All work well. I have an ipod, bluetooth phone and audio input set up. My smartphone plays internet radio and its hooked up to the unit via the audio input so I can listen to internet radio in the car. The blue tooth connection was easy to set up and you can transfer contacts to the unit with bluetooth. I only wish it was easier to update, Pioneer has good customer service but charge a lot to update the unit. If you check out avic forums they will have info on updates and tips.
The Best Nav Out December 14, 2007 Pros- this nav works very good i have it in my 2005 chevy silverado looks great. ive had it for 6 months with no problems. (get a bypass for it it helps alot.)
Cons - the streets change often, business go out of biz, new business will not show up. you will want to upgrade like myself. however, it is Very expense upgrade disks ($250.00)
pioneer already got $2000 from me and they want to charge me $250 more for two $20 dvds.
Pioneer AVIC-Z1: too good to be true May 21, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
At first glance the Pioneer AVIC-Z1 seems too good to be true. Lots of features, many options, and very professional looking. It is not until you have owned and used the unit for a while that the issues become apparent.
First, the navigation is easily confused and offers poor or incorrect navigation instructions (probably due to the out dated road data base). The navigation software has a very inferior routing algorithm as compared to other navigation systems, and calculates the least efficient or longest travel route rather than the shortest or fastest one. Pioneer really needs to go back to the drawing board on this feature.
Second, the music software has one very irritating flaw. There is a long pause between tracks. This is not so much of a problem for most music that has distinct tracks but many songs simply slip from one track into another without pause. The resulting long pause is an unnatural production of the intended music and could have been easily avoided with a better conceived software implementation. There are other issues with the music system as well, the title is only 10 characters (try fitting Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5, Second Movement" in a 10 characters title.
The last issue that I find irritating about the AVIC-Z1 implementation is the rear camera option. In order to use the camera for backing-up requires the user to navigate through several screens to open a camera window. Given the length of time required to boot the software (at least a minute, another irritating problem in itself) and then to have to navigate through the window hierarcy, I find this to be a useless option. If you are like most drivers, you will want to start the engine, buckle-up and back out of the driveway or parking space. I find myself halfway down the road before the system is even ready to use any of it's features (much less the rear view camera which is, at this point, no longer required).
There are many other problems with the unit as well (all of which I have seen implemented on other systems with much better results) but I think I have made my point. Pioneer really needs to improve this product before I could recommend it to anyone.
Pioneer AVIC-Z1 January 16, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This thing is awsome, the nav is easy to use and puts you on the spot. Really like the "look up by phone number, allows you to map a location by phone number. The hard drive is great so I don't have to fumble with cd's. The IPod is also great, a little slow in searches but still great. DVD is clear. Phone function is very nice and easy to use but they need to work on the echo effect the caller hears. The back-up camera only worked one day but I like the function of it. Haven't got sat radio to work yet but the menu work like the others. Unit improved the sound of my system with the stock speakers. I installed this myself and it was tricky, if you have never installed anything like this in a auto before better take it to a pro. Although this is a little pricey if you use your car alot it's worth it. You can get around the DVD and Nav interlocks pretty easy with a little research online.Does not come with a dash trim kit or adaptor plug, would advise to order if your going to install yourself.
Awesome device - Pioneer support is, well, slow... January 5, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've been able to compare this device to a couple different factory instaled navigation units. One from Nissan, the other from Ford. I have also owned a Garmin Street Pilot nav unit.
The Pioneer offers much more flexibility than the factory units. It has clear and bright navigation (even 3D mode!), Ipod interface, Bluetooth, Hard drive space to store music on, XM, Sirius, AM/FM, TV interface, DVD video (multiple outputs), reverse camera ability, voice commands, and there is probably more that I have forgotten...
At any rate, the navigation ability of this unit is outstanding, but not quite as acurate as the Garmin. The Pioneer does not show addresses as the Garmin does but neither does the Nissan or Ford units. The Nissan and Ford DO, however, show elevation, but the Pioneeer does not.
Another key feature missing on the Pioneer is Speed Sensitive Volume. All other GPS units, including the standalone Garmin, have SSV. It is a crime to leave it off of a unit of the expense and calibre of the Pioneer.
The Pioneer uses its hard disk for storing navigation information, but it is fairly dated. In my town, there are several roads that have changed from two way to one way but are not updated on the unit and they were changed two years ago. So, on ocassion, I get sent the wrong way on a one-way street. Just have to pay attention... There are no map updates available now, but the rumor has it that later in 2007 there will be. They may cost money though... That remains to be seen. The beauty of the Garmin was the updates and user accessibility of all GPS info. Neither the Pioneer nor any factory navs offer user control like that.
Also, there is a Z2 unit coming out soon (2007). Rumor also has it that the Z1 can be upgraded via software update to the Z2. That also remains to be seen. Pioneer does not have a strong support website for this product and Pioneer phone support is crazy too. I called to get a firmware update and was on hold for half hour while being transferred to three different people. I never did get the update, because out of frustration, I hung up. The update is available via 3rd party web sites. The best support/information site for this unit is: avic411 dot com. You owe it to yourself to go there before buying any Avic unit.
Lastly, the Bluetooth function for the phone is great, but it does have a pronounced and annoying echo. This was just addressed with a recent firware update which I ran, but I have yet to test the Bluetooth again. Just be aware there have been Bluetooth echo issues with many different phones.
Overall, I would recommend this unit to anyone, but it is not without its glitches. The price has dropped almost a thousand dollars since it debuted, so the price on Amazon is great! I gave the unit five stars, but 4.5 is more accurate due to the minor issues stated above. Still, I think it is the best out there for an all-in-one device.
