1 out of 5 stars altec Lansing im7   January 3, 2009

I purchased this item for my husband for Christmas and it crashed his Ipod each time he used it. We did an internet search and this seems to be a very common problem with this item. Electronics Expo refused to refund all our money for this product because I purchased it in early Novenmber, as a Christmas present, and they have a 30-day return policy. They are charging a 20% restocking fee, plus shipping both ways, which amounts to about $67.00, which is approximately half the price of this product. I would not recommend purchasing anything from this company, as you would think they would have a different policy for Christmas returns. Amazon on the other hand stated that they would refund the difference once it was processed through Electronics Expo, that is why we enjoy shopping on Amazon, they really make an effort to please the customer.

5 out of 5 stars Really shines in a big area   December 23, 2008
I gave it 5 stars for the excellent sound quality in big open areas. I have only used it plugged into a wall outlet, never with batteries. I work in a 80,000 sq. ft. industrial fabrication shop which you can imagine is loud at times.

I have used the iM7 for over a year now and could not be happier with the sound quality and its ability to fill an open work area. Typically I have the volume adjusted 1/2-3/4 and can walk 50-75 feet away and easily enjoy the music. There are things that could be improved which I will touch on briefly. Plenty of reviewers go into detail on the iM7 negative aspects. But in the end this is a great choice if you just want to plug the ipod in, hit a playlist, crank the sound up, and listen all day long!

So the negatives:

The flip-out dock: just be careful with it, mine still works fine.

The remote: I rarely use it, very short range, has to be straight on.

Bass/Treble adjustment: you can't visually tell were it is set. Not a big deal for me, I adjusted it once for my taste and left it alone.

Batteries: I can't say from experience but from the amount of bass it kicks out I would have to say it would eat them up.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound. Survived getting wet!   December 3, 2008
I own this IM7 and the Bose sound dock. Both units sound great. The IM7 has a stronger base sound and on some music is perhaps a bit too strong, so I usually change the ipod's sound to less base. The volume is surprising! Ask my neighbor, 4 houses down from me. Just joking around I turned up the volume while on my porch and she heard it loud and clear. She said it sounded as though the band was playing in my back yard. A couple of weeks ago I left the IM7 on my covered boat dock thinking it was safe from weather. A nasty, windy squall blew in for several hours and I didn't retrieve the IM7 till the next morning. It was completely wet, water even inside the ipod docking area (ipod not in it at the time, thank goodness). I thought it was a goner, but after drying it with a hair dryer it's working fine again and is actually playing as I type this. I would buy another one if it does eventually rust out.

4 out of 5 stars Oh so pleased!   November 16, 2008
Mine had what my husband calls 'speaker rattle.' I was heartbroken. The sound was spectacular except that even at 50% of volume and bass, my unit made a buzzing sound. I've returned it for an exchange and I hope I just happened to get a lemon and the next one will be perfect. Electronics Expo was very responsive and sent me a UPS sticker to make the return without costing me a cent. I will add to my review as soon as I get my replacement IM7! I need good sound and good bass really badly!

Dec.16, 2008 - Okay, I got my replacement a few days ago. They were a bit slow but my new unit works! It works really well and I'm exceedingly happy. We hooked it up to the computer and watched the movie Polar Express and wow, it was fantastic. We travel a great deal and live in an RV so we gotta have small size. It's small, but the sound fills the trailer! I substitute teach dance occasionally and it's very portable (I bought the harness and good thing I did). The bass is bitchen. I did notice on one (new age) song it was too much even at the lowest setting, but, well, I'm not complaining. It is kind of peculiarly made, that's true. I have a lot of space behind my iPod and seems like it could be a potential problem. I have to hold it solidly before I push on the menu or it'll push the whole iPod back. Being cylindrical it's kind of tipsy like. It should be a rectangle. My eyes have trouble seeing the remote buttons and that's a bit of a pain - gray print on white. I bought two different portable boomboxes from Wal-Mart and returned both - JVC and I forget what the other was. They don't hold a candle to this one. I'm 49 and I luuuurve deep, LOUD, bass just like I did when I was 16.

Finally, I have it.

2 out of 5 stars Great Sound & Features, Bad Door Design   November 16, 2008
I love the sound and the remote features and all of the ports on the back. However, after using it for several months, the DOOR will not close anymore. I have to use packing tape to keep it 'closed' and I have to use the cord that connects the iPod to the input jack on the back. Therefore, the iPod does not charge and constantly is using its own batteries. It is too bad that this system has a bad door design, otherwise, I would have given it five stars +!
