Sanity saver January 6, 2009 Used for first time on return from a Christmas Holiday flight (Airtran) in the midst of 11 infants and ~15 toddlers. Plus several non-stop blabbering adults.
Was able to ignore all of the chaos using Airtran's XM/Sirius jack. The sound, particularly compared to the useless headphones Airtran dispenses, was phenomenal. Still a minor background of engine vibration but even that was almost totally eliminated by keeping a slack jaw! 4/5 stars because I could actually use a smaller ear bud than the smallest supplied.
Expected Better December 30, 2008 I've got several (many) ear bud style devices. Trying to find one which does an almost perfect job of blocking outside sound without having to crank up the volume too much. Saw these in one of my fiance's magazines and thought I would try them. The quality is the worse I've seen in this price range. The switch which turns the noise canceling off/on needs to be firmly pushed to "on". It needs an extra "push" to engage. It comes with a short extension cord. Because of the length of the cord attached to the ear buds, you really need this extension. There is a problem with the extension. When the ear bud plus is fully seated in the extension, sound only comes out of the left channel. If I pull it out a little, I get right channel. Pull it out to where it almost falls out, and I get stereo. The problem is clearly their extension since I can plug it directly into my laptop and MP3 players and it works. As for the noise reduction, it says it takes care of 85% (20 db) of noise. I have two different models of Shure and some other ear buds and all of them do at least as good of a job if not better at blocking noise. I'm sure that is due to the other versions forming a firmer fit in the ear. These are comfortable and with the noise canceling, do not need to fit as securely as the others but the others do not require a battery and that means you don't have a battery pack on the cord weighing them down.
Amazing sound quality, noise cancellation December 24, 2008 The first time you listen to music on these earphones, you will notice how rich, full and clear it sounds! Even without the noice cancellation, the earphones make me want to go back to my music collection many more times and each time I notice subtleties that I had missed before. I travel in the NJ/NY underground and regular trains everyday, and the noise cancellation is a great blessing. It never blocks out all the sound, but together with the noise isolation (i.e. the seal it forms around your ear canal) and the cancellation module, all I hear is my music - gone are the rumbling, rattling of the trains and chattering of people around me. The cord length between the noise cancellation module and the end of the cord that goes in your MP3 player is a little weird - still having some trouble figuring out the best way to set this up for my needs. However, overall, these are an awesome set of earphones - comfortable, great sound quality and more than sufficient noice cancellation in a lightweight package.
Excellent December 16, 2008 Once you have these earbuds turn on and your music or movie playing all the background noise is eliminated!!!
Works just as described - I'm quite happy with them! November 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read a lot of reviews for the dozen or so noise-canceling earbuds available on the market. One thing I knew I didn't want was the large over-ear headphones. I'm a traveling professional who leaves town every other week. Size and weight are important in my pack as I carry a couple books, a couple files, a folio, a laptop, power cords, a slim camera, a microphone, a recorder, an extra laptop battery (for long flights), an external floppy disk drive, business cards, office supplies... you get the point. A lot of stuff!
So one more thing could break the seams on the backpack. Enter the Audio-Technica Noise-Canceling Earbuds. They're a perfect size and really do cancel 80-85% of the noise around me while on the flight. When you hit the slider to turn on the noise canceling, it's night and day. While you can't expect dead silence in such a compact form (maybe in the future?), you hear some of the hissing from the noise canceling, you hear some of the constant engine noise, you hear some of the conversations around you... but it's significantly less. Once you get used to the static hiss (white noise), your new world is quite pleasant, really.
I recommend them for any traveling professional. I think they're the best iteration of current technology. I can't wait to see if someone can one-up these in the future. And did I mention Amazon's price is fantastic? The least expensive shipping brought them from the North East to the California coast in a little over a week. Just so you know...
