3 out of 5 stars Sound is Great, Construction is Poor.   December 18, 2008
I bought these ear buds to replace the iconic factory Ipod ones. I find after use that I am happy and slightly impressed, but I'm left feeling as if I should have just stayed with the originals. I thought the sound was great and superior to the factory buds, and it also cancels out SOME noise because of the insulation surrounding the earpieces.

The one thing that really stands out to me about these that almost, and still may be a deal breaker for me, negatively I might add, is the separation element in the middle of the cord of these ear buds. They have a plug in in the middle of these cords, for universal ability I guess, that gets caught in everything that seems to come near or in contact with me. It also weighs down on my ears, where I find it a problem that these ear buds keep popping out. This extension tool feels exactly like a weight barring down on my ears, trying to pull them out where I find myself constantly having to rearrange and readjust the ear pieces themselves. Additionally, the cover of the speakers feels like cardboard, and as such is prone to obstruction and destruction so be careful there.

To sum up, I think they are worth the money you pay for them, but have severe annoyances along with poor construction. I would say they are just a smidgen above factory buds, and you could probably find better ones out there for that matter.

4 out of 5 stars Best midline in-ear earphones   December 14, 2008
I had a pair of EX51's prior to this, and really liked the longer cord for the left earbud so it could go behind my neck to keep the cable out of my work. The cable finally wore out, and so it was time to upgrade.

Did some research and decided this model (the EX71) was a good upgrade. Audio quality is great for what I use it for.

I replaced the thinner in ear inserts with heavier ones from another pair of in ear earphones I have, and they stay in my ear very well now, whereas before, the thinner inserts would fall out occasionally.

Overall, i rate the earphones 4 out of 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Great sound, poor durability.   December 8, 2008
I've gone through 2 sets of these headphones in about a year. I am using them at the gym primarily, but also to listen to radio play-by-play at sporting events. I've had both a white pair (purchased at Best Buy) and a black pair (purchased via Amazon).

The sound from these ear buds is great. Absolutely no complaints. I was able to get the perfect sound with a little tuning on my Sansa e280 running RockBox. No complaints here.

Durability: I did not have the problem I've read in several reviews with the wire coating coming off. In fact, the coating is just as it was the day I purchased them. My durability issue is that they only last about 4 months before the right ear bud just ceases to function. It happened in both pairs in the same frame (4-4.5 months).

While I love the sound, fit and cord length of these headphones, I will be looking for something a little more durable. I don't have the cord flying or catching on anything, so I'm not sure what might have contributed to this failure other than a design by Sony for them to barely outlast the 90-day warranty. I will be purchasing a third and final pair at this time and if they, too, fail, I will be on a quest for a different brand with a hopefully similar fit and sound.

4 out of 5 stars great headphones   November 17, 2008
i bought this as a backup for my older headphones of the same style. i love for two reasons: the one long side fits well behind my head and out of my way (takes some getting used to) and the extension cord lets me easily plug into my ipod when its on my armband without a long cord hanging around. these buds are great on the subway to work and also at the gym. they block out ambient noise and are plenty loud with good range at the right price. sony even improved this version by shortening the extension cord.

5 out of 5 stars Great Headphones   November 9, 2008
These headphones have great sound--great bass and they stay in your ears during a good run. The noise cancelling is really good especially for the price.
